How to Rank Higher on Google Maps in Dubai: Google's Rules and the 2026 Ranking Factors

How to rank higher on Google Maps in Dubai, from Google's rules and Whitespark's 2026 ranking factors, with UAE holiday hours and a 20-point listing checklist.

The short version

Google says local results depend mainly on relevance, distance and popularity, and that you cannot pay for a better position. In Dubai, the parts you control are the most specific primary category, a real address with signage and an accurate pin, correct regular, holiday and Ramadan hours, a steady flow of genuine reviews, and a website that matches your profile.

Google publishes no weights, but in Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search experts the primary category ranks first of 187 factors. Keywords in the business name rank third, yet Google says unnecessary information in the name can get a profile suspended, and a virtual office or flexi desk cannot be your storefront on Google.

Google's UAE holiday list does not match the official one, so set special hours yourself for every public holiday, including both days of National Day. For reviews, experts reward a steady pace and rate too many too fast as a suspension risk.

What to do(3)
  • If you visit customers, hide your address and list up to 20 service areas.
  • Put your name, address and phone on your website as text, matching your profile.
  • Check the Performance report monthly, and compare Ramadan with the previous Ramadan.

A competitor two streets away appears on Google Maps for "salon Al Barsha" and you do not, even with better reviews. Most guides tell you to "optimise your profile" without saying what Google weighs, or what gets a UAE listing suspended.

This guide uses two sources you can check, Google's own Business Profile rules and Whitespark's 2026 survey of 47 local search experts, and applies them to how UAE businesses work, from flexi desks and unit numbers to Ramadan hours. Every source was checked on 28 October 2026. It covers ranking only, not suspended or unverified listings.

What decides who ranks on Google Maps in Dubai?

Google says local results are "mainly based on relevance, distance, and popularity", and that "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google" (Google Business Profile Help).

Relevance is "how well a Business Profile matches what someone is searching for", and distance is how far you are from the searcher. The third, explained under the heading Prominence, is "also based on info like how many websites link to your business and how many reviews you have."

Google does not publish weights. The closest public evidence is Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors, published by Darren Shaw on 6 November 2025: 47 experts scored 187 factors from 0 to 5, and the scores were "summed and ranked by total score". Read them as expert opinion, not confirmed weights.

Rank Factor (Whitespark's wording) Score Can you change it?
1 Primary GBP Category 227 Yes
2 Proximity of Address to the Point of Search 225 No
3 Keywords in GBP Business Title 223 Only by breaking Google's rules
4 Physical Address in City of Search 213 Only with a real location there
5 Business is Open at Time of Search 189 Yes, with accurate hours
6 High Numerical Google Ratings (e.g. 4-5) 181 Indirectly
7 Address Is Showing on GBP (Not SAB) 176 Only if customers visit you
8 Additional GBP Categories 173 Yes
9 Quantity of Native Google Reviews (w/text) 170 Yes
10 Proper Placement of the Map Pin 165 Yes
11 Recency of Reviews 164 Yes
12 Proximity of Address to Centroid 157 No
13 Click-Through Rate from Local Pack/Maps Search Results 156 Indirectly
14 Sustained Influx of Reviews Over Time (rather than bursts) 154 Yes
15 HTML NAP Matching GBP NAP 153 Yes, on your website

A search for "dentist near me" returns different lists in JLT and Deira, because distance changes. You cannot move closer to everyone, so work on what you control, starting with completeness: Google says "businesses with complete and accurate info are more likely to show up in local search results" (Google).

Which primary category should you choose?

Choose the most specific category that describes your business as a whole. Google's example is "Nail salon" instead of "Salon", and it says "the categories you select affect your local ranking on Google" (Google).

In Whitespark's survey, primary category is the top map factor (227), and "Incorrect Primary Category" is the second most damaging negative factor (214). Google's guidelines give three tests:

  1. Is, not has. Pick categories that complete "This business IS a", not "this business HAS a".
  2. As few as possible. "Use as few categories as possible to describe your overall core business."
  3. Not keywords. "Do not use categories solely as keywords or to describe attributes of your business."

Additional categories (173) are for real parts of the business. Google warns "Do not select a category for every product or service", and says a health club with an independently operated cafe should not add "Cafe" (Google). Whitespark's experts rate categories from unrelated industries as a negative factor (125).

To check your area, note the category shown for each business above you on Maps.

Note: Google says that after you add or edit a category, "you might be asked to verify your business again." Change categories when someone can handle verification.

What should your name, address and map pin look like in the UAE?

Use your real-world name with nothing added, the full address down to the unit and floor, and a pin on your actual entrance.

The business name factor: what it does, and why not to do it

Whitespark's experts rate keywords in the business name the third map factor (223), the pull behind names padded with words like "best keratin Al Barsha". But Google's rule is clear: "Including unnecessary information in your business name isn't permitted, and could result in the suspension of your Business Profile" (Google). Whitespark itself lists "Keyword Stuffing in GBP Business Name" as the eighth suspension risk (125), and its expert Andrew Shotland says of exact-match keywords: "It still works, but seems like Google is cracking down on this much more than it used to."

Use the name on your sign and website. One rule matters in the UAE: Google's list of what a name must not include covers "Repeated Bilingual Names / Script Transliterations", even when the sign shows both, so enter the name once, not in English and Arabic side by side.

If a competitor's name looks stuffed, anyone can suggest an edit, and Google's Report a business page points to its Business Redressal Complaint form for "misleading business names, phone numbers, or business URLs" that "raise suspicion of fraudulent activity".

A full UAE address and an accurate pin

Google asks for "a precise, accurate address" and says "suite numbers, floors, building numbers, and so on may also be included" (Google). In Dubai, that means unit or shop number, floor, building, street and area, such as Al Barsha 1.

If your address has no street number, or Google cannot find it, pin the business directly on the map: Edit profile, Location, edit Business location, then Adjust. Where the official address is not accurate, Google also allows nearby cross-streets or landmarks (Google). Pin placement is factor 10 (165), and an "Incorrectly-placed Map Marker in GBP" is a negative factor (164).

Flexi desks, virtual offices and home-based businesses

A flexi desk or virtual office cannot be your storefront on Google. Google says a business that "rents a physical mailing address but doesn't operate out of that location" is not eligible there, P.O. boxes "aren't acceptable", and a co-working office qualifies only with clear signage, customers received there and its own staff present during business hours (Google).

Whitespark's experts rank a "PO Box, UPS Mail Store, Virtual Office, or Other False Address" as the top suspension risk (202). That matters if your trade licence is tied to a flexi desk or virtual office rather than premises customers visit.

If you go to your customers (cleaning, home services, mobile beauty), set up a service-area business: hide the address and list up to 20 service areas within "about 2 hours of driving time" of your base (Google).

Note: Service-area profiles give up factor 7 (176), but showing an address customers cannot visit carries more risk. Google says a service-area business "should hide your business address from customers", and Whitespark's experts rate showing it as a suspension risk (105).

How should you set hours for Ramadan, Eid and UAE public holidays?

Set your regular hours, add special hours for each public holiday before the date arrives, and switch your regular hours to Ramadan hours for the month. "Business is Open at Time of Search" is the fifth map factor (189), and Google says that on listed holidays "a warning may appear on your Business Profile" saying your hours might differ (Google).

Google's special hours page sets the rules:

  • Special hours only show if your profile is set to "Open with main hours".
  • Confirm holiday hours "even if they're the same as your regular hours".
  • "A set of special hours can't exceed 24 hours." Hours from before midnight to past noon the next day go in two sets, one ending and one starting at midnight.
  • Special hours cover up to 6 days in a row; for 7 or more, Google says to mark the business temporarily closed. Experts rate "Business Marked as Temporarily Closed" a negative factor (166), so keep short breaks in special hours.

The UAE special hours calendar, November 2026 to May 2027

Google's holiday list for the UAE does not match the official one. The UAE Government portal lists public holidays under Cabinet Resolution No. 27 of 2024, "applicable to both, public and private sectors". Google's list adds two occasions that are not on it and shows only one day of National Day.

Date Occasion On Google's UAE list? Official UAE holiday? What to do
30 November 2026 Commemoration Day Yes No Confirm your hours
2 and 3 December 2026 National Day 2 December only Yes, both days Set special hours for both days
1 January 2027 New Year's Day Yes Yes Set special hours
5 and 6 January 2027 Isra and Mi'raj Yes No Confirm your hours
About 8 February 2027 Ramadan begins (expected) No No Set Ramadan hours for the month
From about 9 March 2027 Eid Al Fitr, 3 or 4 days (expected) Not yet Yes Set special hours once confirmed
About 15 to 18 May 2027 Arafat Day and Eid Al Adha (likely) Not yet Yes Set special hours once confirmed

Sources: Google's holiday list and the UAE portal, checked 28 October 2026; expected 2027 dates from The National, 12 August 2026.

The UAE portal says "Islamic holidays are determined according to moon sighting", so update the 2027 dates once announced. For Ramadan, Google's guidelines say "you may use your current seasonal hours as your regular hours", so change your regular hours for the month and back after Eid, rather than adding 30 dates of special hours.

How do reviews move your Maps ranking, and what does Google forbid?

Google says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google). Whitespark's experts reward a high rating (181), many reviews with text (170), recent reviews (164) and a sustained influx "rather than bursts" (154). As Darren Shaw puts it: "It's not an overall numbers game; it's a recency/frequency game."

Bursts carry risk. The survey rates "Receiving Too Many Google Reviews Too Fast" as a suspension risk (104), alongside "Reports of Review Gating" (134) and "Reports of Fake Reviews on your GBP" (132).

Google's Maps content policy lets you ask for reviews of "a genuine experience", but bans:

  • incentives such as payment, discounts, or free goods or services, including for changing or removing a negative review;
  • discouraging negative reviews, or asking only happy customers;
  • pressuring customers to review while on the premises;
  • asking staff to collect a set number of reviews, or reviews with specific content.

For fake engagement, Google can stop a profile receiving new reviews for a set period, unpublish its existing reviews for a set period, and show "a warning to let consumers know that fake reviews were removed" (Google).

UAE law adds its own risk. In October 2026 Dubai Police arrested a group over false reviews on a company's Google Maps page, saying several commercial shops "had formed groups to publish false and damaging comments". The National reports that under Article 43 of the UAE Cybercrimes Law (Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021), online insults and statements that expose others to punishment or public contempt can bring fines of AED 250,000 to 500,000 and/or imprisonment. Lawyer Ludmila Yamalova told the paper "negative reviews are not illegal in the UAE", but "the distinction between legitimate criticism and unlawful defamation is not always clear-cut".

Note: This is general information, not legal advice. For a review dispute, speak to a UAE lawyer.

How to ask, the right way

In your Business Profile, select Read reviews, then Get more reviews to copy your review link; Google suggests sending requests by email, WhatsApp message or Facebook post (Google). Send it to every customer after every visit, in Arabic or English, so reviews arrive steadily. Our Arabic and English review request templates stay inside Google's rules, and the request fits after the WhatsApp booking reminders salons and clinics send.

If you would rather not send these by hand, Hoorax builds WhatsApp assistants that can send your review link after each booking, so every customer is asked the same way.

Then reply, in the reviewer's language. Google says "positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out" (Google).

What does your website have to do with your Maps ranking?

Your website backs up your profile. Whitespark's experts put "HTML NAP Matching GBP NAP" (the same name, address and phone on your site as on your profile) in the top 15 map factors (153), and score "Absence of Crawlable NAP on Website" as a negative factor (121) (Whitespark).

  1. Contact details as text. Name, address and phone written on the page, not only in an image.
  2. A page for each service. "Dedicated Page for Each Service" is the second strongest AI visibility factor in the survey (170).
  3. No redirect to another domain. "Website URL Forwards to a Different Domain" is a suspension risk (115), and Google's guidelines say not to provide URLs that redirect users to landing pages other than those of the actual business.
  4. A clean site. "Site Hacked / Presence of Malware" is a negative factor (164).

Arabic pages widen what you can be found for; see whether a UAE business website needs Arabic. If visitors arrive but do not get in touch, run the self-audit for a site with visitors but no enquiries.

If you are rebuilding, Hoorax builds business websites set up this way, and you can estimate a build first.

How does your Business Profile feed Google's AI answers and ChatGPT?

It feeds Google's AI answers directly, and ChatGPT far less. Google's guide to generative AI features, updated 10 July 2026, says using Google Business Profiles "can help your products and services to be visible in both AI responses and other Google Search results", and that "no third-party tool has access to our internal ranking or AI systems."

BrightLocal's study of about 1.97 million citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews (16 September 2026) covers what appear to be US searches, so treat it as a guide rather than UAE data:

Finding BrightLocal figure
Citations from business websites 42%
Citations from Google Business Profiles 28.5% in the text, 28.63% in the table
ChatGPT's sources Leans on Yelp and Bing; Business Profiles "hardly used"
Tracked business mentioned 66% of searches on Google Maps, 32% to 38% on the AI tools

So your profile matters most on Maps and in Google's AI answers, while your website and mentions elsewhere matter across every AI tool. Whitespark's top AI visibility factors agree: expert "best of" lists (179), a page for each service (170), prominence on industry sites (167) and quality mentions in news, blogs and associations (160). Our guide to getting ChatGPT and Google AI to recommend a Dubai business covers the rest.

How to tell whether your changes are working

Go to business.google.com and click Performance. The report shows the search terms people used to find you, profile views on Search and Maps, and, where they apply, calls, direction requests, website clicks, messages and bookings (Google). It works only for verified profiles, and search terms update at the start of each month, taking up to 5 days to appear. Compare whole months, and Ramadan with the previous Ramadan.

Can someone set this up for you?

Yes, for the website and review parts. Hoorax, a web studio in Al Barsha 1, Dubai, does not sell ongoing local SEO management on its own, and it does not promise rankings, which Google decides with no way to pay for a better place. It builds what this guide keeps coming back to: a business website with a page for each service, matching contact details and the basic SEO setup (the Grow plan also sets up and submits your Google Maps listing, where Google allows it), and a WhatsApp assistant that can send your review link after each booking. See pricing for each service, then send a WhatsApp message with your business name, your area and the part you want help with.

8 questions, answered short

Frequently asked questions

01Can I pay Google to rank higher on Google Maps?

No. Google says "there's no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google" (Google). Google Ads is a separate, paid product. The unpaid local ranking comes from relevance, distance and popularity, so the work is in your profile, reviews and website.

02How long does it take to rank higher on Google Maps?

Nobody can promise a date, because Google does not publish one. Google says address changes usually show in about 10 minutes but can take up to 30 days (Google), and approved service area edits may take up to 48 hours (Google). Review signals build over time, and Whitespark's survey calls reviews "a recency/frequency game", so a steady pace beats a one-off push.

03Can I use my free zone flexi desk address on Google Maps?

Not as a storefront. Google says a location where a business "rents a physical mailing address but doesn't operate out of that location" is not eligible, and a co-working office qualifies only with signage, customers received there and your own staff present (Google). If you serve customers at their homes or offices, set up a service-area profile with the address hidden instead.

04Should I add keywords like "best salon Dubai" to my business name?

No. Whitespark's experts rate it the third map factor, so it may lift rankings, but Google says unnecessary information in the name "isn't permitted" and "could result in the suspension of your Business Profile" (Google). The same survey lists keyword stuffing in the name as a suspension risk. Use the name on your sign.

05Does replying to Google reviews help my ranking?

Google does not say replies raise your rank, but it says "positive reviews and helpful replies can help your business stand out" (Google). In Whitespark's survey, "Presence of Owner Responses to Most Reviews" (136) sits among the factors that win customers, not among the top map ranking factors. Reply to every review, in the language it was written in.

06Can customers message my business on WhatsApp from Google Maps in the UAE?

Possibly, but Google does not promise it. Its help page says verified profiles can add a WhatsApp link or a text number under Edit profile, Contact, Chat, but "chat options are currently available for select regions", and it does not name the UAE (Google). If the option is missing, put a WhatsApp button on your website instead.

07Does my Google Business Profile affect ChatGPT and Google AI answers?

It affects Google's AI answers most. Google says Business Profiles can help a business be visible in AI responses (Google), and BrightLocal found Google AI Mode and AI Overviews rely heavily on profile data while ChatGPT relies more on Yelp and Bing (BrightLocal). Business websites together made up 42% of citations in that study, against 28.5% for Business Profiles.

08What can I do about fake negative reviews from a competitor?

Report each review from your profile or Google's Reviews Management Tool. Google removes only reviews that break its policies, says evaluation "typically takes several days", and offers a one-time appeal if a review is not removed (Google). In a case reported by The National in October 2026, Dubai Police acted on a company's complaint about coordinated false reviews; speak to a lawyer before taking that route.
