The salon two streets away has 400 Google reviews and you have 38. Asking feels awkward, and the shortcuts are tempting: 10% off for a five-star review, or sending the link only to customers who smiled on the way out. Both break Google's review rules, and a review bought with a discount is what Google calls fake engagement, which can get a whole profile's reviews frozen or hidden.
This guide gives you copy-ready WhatsApp messages in Arabic and English, the steps for your review link and QR code, the exact lines Google draws (checked 28 October 2026) and what UAE law says about fake reviews.
What does Google allow when you ask customers for reviews?
Google lets you ask any customer for a review of a genuine experience, as long as you offer nothing in return and do not steer the rating or the words. Its Maps user-generated content policy allows merchants to "solicit or encourage the posting of content that does represent a genuine experience, without offering incentives to do so or attempting to influence the rating or the contents of the review."
The same page lists what merchants may not do:
| Google's rule (quoted) | What it means on WhatsApp |
|---|---|
| No incentives "such as payment, discounts, free goods and/or services" for "posting any review" or for the "revision or removal of a negative review" | No discount, free treatment, coffee or cash, whatever the rating |
| Do not "discourage or prohibit negative reviews, or selectively solicit positive reviews from customers" | Ask every customer, not only happy ones (this is "review gating") |
| Do not "require or pressure users to leave ratings or write reviews while on the premises" | A QR code on the counter is fine; staff watching a customer post is not |
| Do not "request that specific content be included" | No five stars, service names or keywords |
| No "staff solicit a certain number of reviews", and no requests for "content that identifies a staff member" | No review targets per stylist, and no "please mention Sara" |
| No content "based on a conflict of interest", such as "current or former employment" | Staff, owners, relatives and competitors should not review you |
Some template sites get this wrong. One WhatsApp template library, updated July 2026, offers a review request with 15% off the next visit and says "Google prohibits incentivized reviews that require a positive rating". Google's wording covers "any review", and its review link page says incentives for reviews are "fake engagement" and "strictly prohibited", whatever the rating.
How do you get your Google review link and QR code?
You copy both from your Business Profile: select Read reviews, then Get more reviews, then copy the link or save the QR code. Google's step-by-step page says the QR code "can only be generated on a computer browser, not on mobile devices", so do this on a laptop.
- Open your Business Profile on a computer, signed in with the Google Account that manages it.
- Select Read reviews, then Get more reviews.
- Copy the link, or right-click the QR code and select "Save image as" for your printer.
- Test it on your phone. Customers "must be signed into a Google Account to leave a review" (Google).
- Save it in WhatsApp as a Quick Reply, which WhatsApp describes as a shortcut "for messages you frequently send".
Google suggests adding the link to receipts and "the end of a chat interaction", displaying the QR code in your shop, and sending requests by WhatsApp (Google). Each branch has its own profile, so send the right branch's link.
What should a WhatsApp review request say?
A good request is short, personal and neutral: the customer's name, the visit, one plain ask for an honest review, the link and your name.
- Name the visit. "Your appointment today" reads as a message from a person, not a blast.
- Ask for honesty, not stars. Leave out ratings, services and staff names.
- Put the link on its own line so it is easy to tap.
- Match the customer's language. If you are not sure, send the Arabic and English versions together.
- Keep offers out. Even an unrelated promotion can read as a reward, and Meta counts "a feedback survey with promotional content" as a marketing template (Meta for Developers).
- For clinics, keep treatment details out. Write "your visit", because previews can show on a locked screen.
You also need permission. WhatsApp's Business Messaging Policy lets you contact people only if they gave you their number and "you have received opt-in permission from the recipient confirming that they wish to receive subsequent messages", and you "must respect all requests" to opt out. Mention follow-up messages when you take the booking.
Which review request templates can you copy, in Arabic and English?
These seven templates follow Google's policy as quoted above: every customer gets the same ask, nothing is offered, and nothing about the rating or content is suggested. Hoorax wrote them for this guide on 28 October 2026; copy, adapt and share them freely, by WhatsApp, SMS or email. Replace everything in {curly brackets}. The Arabic versions spell Google in Arabic script so they display cleanly right to left.
1. After a visit (salon, cafe, gym, cleaning job)
English
Hi {Name}, thank you for visiting {Business} today. If you have a minute, we would appreciate an honest review on Google. It helps other people find us.
{review link}
Thank you, {Your name} at {Business}
{رابط التقييم}
مع الشكر، {اسمك} من {اسم النشاط}
2. After an appointment (clinic, spa, salon)
English
Hi {Name}, thank you for your appointment at {Business} today. If you would like to share your experience, you can leave a review on Google here:
{review link}
And if you need anything from us, just reply to this message. {Business}
{رابط التقييم}
وإن احتجت أي شيء منا، يكفي أن ترد على هذه الرسالة. {اسم النشاط}
The last line offers help, but never "instead of" a review, which would discourage negative reviews.
3. After a delivery or direct order (restaurant, retail)
English
Hi {Name}, your order from {Business} has been delivered. Thank you for ordering from us. If you would like to tell others what you thought, you can review us on Google here:
{review link}
{Business}
{رابط التقييم}
{اسم النشاط}
4. One reminder, a few days later
English
Hi {Name}, just one reminder in case it is useful: here is the link to review {Business} on Google.
{review link}
No problem at all if you would rather not. We will not send this again.
{رابط التقييم}
5. When the customer has complained
English
Hi {Name}, thank you for telling us, and we are sorry about {the problem}. {What you will do, for example: our manager will call you today to put it right.} If you would like to share your experience on Google, the link is here:
{review link}
We read every review.
{رابط التقييم}
Fix the problem whatever the customer decides. A refund offered on condition that a review is changed or removed is a banned incentive.
6. Counter card and what staff say
Card, English and Arabic
How did we do? Scan to leave an honest review on Google. Thank you.
Staff line, English and Arabic
If you have a minute later, this code takes you to our Google reviews.
"Later" matters: Google bars pressuring customers to review "while on the premises".
7. Automated template for the WhatsApp Business Platform (API)
Submit one template per language in the Utility category, with a URL button that opens your review link.
English body, button "Write a review"
Hi {{1}}, thank you for your visit to {{2}} on {{3}}. You can share your experience of this visit on Google using the button below.
{{1}} is the first name, {{2}} the business or branch, {{3}} the visit date. Meta's categorisation rules say "a general/generic survey or request for feedback will not be approved as utility", which is why the template names the visit and its date. Meta's own utility example asks about a specific order, not a public review, so a review request may still be classed as marketing, and one with an offer will be. Meta can also change a template's category after approval.
Lines to cut from any review request, and what to write instead
| If your message says | Why it breaks Google's policy | Write this instead |
|---|---|---|
| "Leave us a 5-star review" | Influences the rating | "Leave an honest review" |
| "Review us and get 10% off your next visit" | An incentive for "posting any review" | Remove the offer |
| "Happy? Review us. Not happy? Message us first." | Selectively solicits positive reviews | Send everyone the same request |
| "Please mention Sara by name" | Content "that identifies a staff member" | Leave the content to the customer |
| "Please mention our laser hair removal in Al Barsha" | Requests "specific content" | Leave the content to the customer |
| "Could you post it now, before you leave?" | Pressure "while on the premises" | "If you have a minute later" |
| "Each therapist needs 10 reviews this month" | Staff collecting "a certain number of reviews" | Check every customer was asked |
| "Could your family leave us a review?" | A "conflict of interest" | Ask only real customers |
Quotes in the middle column are from Google's Maps user-generated content policy, checked 28 October 2026.
When should you send the request, and how often?
Send it to every customer soon after each visit, appointment or delivery, with at most one reminder, so reviews arrive at a steady pace rather than in a rush. Google says "more reviews and positive ratings can help your business's local ranking" (Google), and readers care how recent they are: in BrightLocal's 2026 survey of 1,002 US adults, "74% seek reviews written in the last three months."
Whitespark's 2026 Local Search Ranking Factors, a survey of 47 local search experts published on 6 November 2025, scores review signals like this:
| Review signal | Expert score |
|---|---|
| High numerical Google ratings (4 to 5) | 181, 6th of all Maps factors |
| Quantity of native Google reviews with text | 170, 9th |
| Recency of reviews | 164, 11th |
| Sustained influx of reviews over time (rather than bursts) | 154, 14th |
| Reports of review gating | 134, 6th of profile suspension risks |
| Receiving too many Google reviews too fast | 104, 12th of profile suspension risks |
These are expert opinions, not Google statements, but the lesson is clear: never message two years of old customers in one afternoon. Suggested timing:
| Business | When to send | Template |
|---|---|---|
| Salon, spa, barber | The same day, after the appointment | 2 |
| Clinic | The same day or next morning, no treatment details | 2 |
| Cafe or restaurant, dine-in booking | The same evening | 1 |
| Delivery or online order | Once delivered | 3 |
| Gym or studio | After the first class or first week | 1 |
| Cleaning, maintenance, trades | Once the job is signed off | 1 |
For salons and clinics, the request fits at the end of the flow in our guide to WhatsApp bookings and reminders. Reviews are one part of ranking higher on Google Maps in Dubai, and they also feed AI answers: 42% of US consumers who used AI to find a local business "always check reviews on native review platforms" (BrightLocal, March 2026). See getting recommended by ChatGPT in Dubai.
Should you send review requests from the WhatsApp Business app or the API?
Either works: the free WhatsApp Business app suits requests sent by hand, and the WhatsApp Business Platform (the API) suits requests triggered automatically by each completed booking or delivery.
In the app. Save templates 1 to 5 as Quick Replies and use Labels to mark each chat "review asked". Send requests one by one or in small daily batches; a broadcast to your whole list is exactly the burst to avoid.
On the API. Unless the customer has messaged you in the last 24 hours, you need an approved template like number 7, because Meta says businesses "can only send non-template messages to users when this window is open" (Meta for Developers). Meta charges for each delivered template message, and our guide to WhatsApp Business API pricing in the UAE lists the rates.
Our comparison of the WhatsApp Business app and the API explains when switching is worth it. If you would rather not build the automation yourself, Hoorax builds WhatsApp assistants that can send the request after each completed booking, in the customer's language, when you agree it in the brief.
What happens if you break Google's review rules?
Google removes reviews that break its rules, and for fake engagement, which includes reviews bought with discounts or free goods, it can also restrict the whole profile. Its page on Business Profile restrictions lists what can follow a fake engagement finding:
- the "Business Profile will not be able to receive new reviews or ratings for set period of time";
- the "Business Profile's existing reviews or ratings will be unpublished for set period of time";
- the "Business Profile will display a warning to let consumers know that fake reviews were removed".
Google does not say how long the "set period" lasts. It notifies owners "via email if we plan to apply a restriction", and you can appeal. The restrictions page names only fake engagement; review gating is listed under rating manipulation in the policy, and the experts in the table above rate it a suspension risk.
Note: Restrictions apply to the whole profile, so a discount that brings in 30 reviews this month can hide the 38 you earned honestly as well.
What can you do about fake reviews, and what does UAE law say?
Report a fake review to Google first and keep dated screenshots, because in the UAE false or insulting online reviews can also be a police matter under the Cybercrimes Law. Google's reporting page offers the Report icon next to the review in your Business Profile, or the Reviews Management Tool.
- "Review evaluation typically takes several days", and the tool shows each report's status.
- "If a flagged review doesn't qualify for removal, submit a one-time appeal", for up to 10 reviews at once.
- Google removes only reviews that break its policies and "doesn't get involved in conflict between businesses and customers".
Meanwhile, reply publicly and calmly. Google advises owners to "avoid using your response to offer deals or promotions" and to "never share a reviewer's private information or engage in personal attacks" (Google).
The Dubai Police case. In October 2026 Dubai Police arrested a group over false reviews on a company's Google Maps page. According to Major Yasser Juma Mohammed, head of the Social Media Crimes Section, investigations found that certain commercial shops had formed groups to post false comments about the company, and the case began with a complaint from the company's management (Khaleej Times, 12 October 2026).
The law. The National, explaining the case, points to Article 43 of the UAE Cybercrimes Law, Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combating Rumours and Cybercrimes, under which online insults and statements that expose others to punishment or public contempt are punishable: "The penalties can include fines ranging from Dh250,000 to Dh500,000 and/or imprisonment." The UAE Public Prosecution has described the offence as insulting another person, or attributing to them an act that could expose them to punishment or contempt, through an information network, with "imprisonment and a fine of not less than Dhs250,000 and not more than Dhs500,000" or either one (Gulf Today, 2024). The same range appeared in October 2026 in an awareness campaign by the Ministry of Interior, Dubai Police and the Dubai Electronic Security Centre (Khaleej Times).
Honest bad reviews are not the target. Lawyer Ludmila Yamalova of law firm Lylaw, quoted by The National, said: "Negative reviews are not illegal in the UAE." Her advice, "Criticise the product or service, not the individual", suits your replies too. Faking praise carries its own risk: in 2019 Dubai Eye reported, in a piece featuring an Al Tamimi & Co media lawyer, that "using false reviews to increase the popularity of your product or service could land you in legal trouble in the UAE", though it named no specific law.
Note: This is general information, not legal advice. If a review campaign is damaging your business, speak to a UAE lawyer before filing a complaint.
Can someone set this up for you?
Yes: Hoorax, an AI-native web studio in Al Barsha 1, Dubai, builds WhatsApp assistants for UAE salons, clinics, restaurants and other service businesses. For reviews, if you agree it in the brief, the assistant can send your Google review link after each completed booking or delivery, in Arabic or English, to every customer in the same way, using wording like the templates above: no discounts, no stars, no filtering by mood. Meta still charges its own fee for each template delivered through the API. See what each service includes on the pricing page, then send us a WhatsApp message with your business name, your area and how you take bookings today.
